Last But One (last semester final project)

Rust Dyeing

Shibori (pole wrapping)

I had chosen to try shibori as a possible technique because through it i wanted to show the bright colors and the beauty of the cells.

Some other experimentations

I had tried to manipulate the fabric by using the hot air gun.It burns the fabric making it fragile.
I wanted to bring across the idea of fragility of the beauty that i see in the cancer cells. The technique metaphorically works well but it makes the fabric extremely fragile and difficult to make any form out of it.
I had also tried putting acid on to organza. The cloth was eaten away by the acid. But again it made it very fragile.

Cancer

  • Cancer (medical term: malignant neoplasm) is a class of disease in which a group of cells display uncontrolled growth (division beyond the normal limits),invasion (intrusion on and destruction of adjacent tissues), and sometimes metastasis (spread to other locations in the body via lymph or blood).
  Classification of Cancer
  • Carcinoma: Malignant tumors derived from epithelial cells. This group represents the most common cancers, including the common forms of breast, prostate, lung and colon cancer.

  • Sarcoma: Malignant tumors derived from connective tissue, or mesenchymal cells.

  • Lymphoma and leukemia: Malignancies derived from hematopoietic (blood-forming) cells

  •   Germ cell tumor: Tumors derived from totipotent cells. In adults most often found in the testicle and ovary; in fetuses, babies, and young children most often found on the body midline, particularly at the tip of the tailbone; in horses most often found at the poll (base of the skull).

  • Blastic tumor or blastoma: A tumor (usually malignant) which resembles an immature or embryonic tissue. Many of these tumors are most common in children.

SOME THOUGHTS

I was carried away by the beauty of the images that i was looking at..but they are images of the most deadly, ugly truth that human kind has to face....

Here, the 'beauty' and the 'ugly' co-exists, but the ugly is so overpowering and mind boggling that it overpowers the beauty...
Beauty can bring in new hope...
But how do i potray this 'beauty' to make it more relevant to the people who has faced the 'ugly'??
Make them come face to face to the ugly truth and then help to fight it....
Will people actually see the 'beauty' or will they say it is just irrelevant and insensitive to focus on the 'beauty' in this case??

How do i focus on the beauty but not merely make pretty looking things which might take away the seriousness of the issue??

How do i make the beauty compliment the ugly and leave the audience with a mixed feeling??

All these thoughts, left me pondering and i went ahead to reserch on cancer case studies and artworks on the topic,to understand peoples perspectives and experiences...
I donot know how this research will help me answer the questions and show me a way to go ahead but i had come across some really interesting food for thought..

Here is an interesting piece....

I AM 1/2 OF A 1/2 OF A 1/2

1/2 OF A MAN
1/2 OF A WOMAN
MINUS ONE
I AM ONE WOMAN
I/2 OF A 1/2 OF A 1/2
HALF OF A WHOLE
DOESN'T FILL UP A BRA
BUT IT FEELS UP MY HEAD
WHEN HALF OF MY ROUNDNESS
IS ENTIRELY GONE
AND IT ISN'T HALF AS APPEALING
AS HALF OF THE LEFTOVERS
WHICH CAN BE WORTH MORE
THAN JUST HALF OF YOUR TIME
BECAUSE THERE IS
AFTER ALL
ALL OF MYSELF
WHICH IS STILL HERE
(ENTIRELY HERE)
AND MY ONE-SIDED FLATNESS
WILL NOT BE HIDDEN AWAY

There is a bright side to everything! When I'm old
and gravity has taken its toll, my implanted breast will re-
main erect like a sixteen year old's.

31st March 2010: research on techniques/materials continues
1st April 2010: more research,experimenting with techniques

8th April 2010: research on different forms of skirts, sketching, patterns, using photoshop to decide the placement of the rust dye patterns

9th April 2010 Friday: digital imaging of skirt patterns, iterating the patterns and the form, approximatting the amount of cloth required and buying fabric, visit to the market(jumma masjid road)
